WHITE, John (1867-1951)

John White was minister at Shettleston Church of Scotland  from 1893-1904.  During that time he became embroiled in what became known as the Shettleston Church Case  and was instrumental in the construction of a replacement parish church plus two additional churches – St. Michael’s Carntyne  and Tollcross St Margaret's .  He was later called to the Barony Church of Scotland  where he served from 1911-34.

White was a key figure in the efforts to reunite the United Free Church  with the Church of Scotland  during the period 1908-29.  His significant contribution to the success of this movement was recognised following the unification of 1929 when he was chosen to be the Moderator of the first united Assembly.  Commemorative plaques to Reverend White are to be found both in Shettleston Old* and Tollcross Park St. Margaret’s churches – the present designations of two of the churches still in use.
