WAUGH, Thomas (1920-2005)

As a local historian Thomas Waugh produced two liberally illustrated texts on Shettleston which have become standard reference works on the area - “Shettleston from Old and New Photographs” (1986) and “Shettleston Past and Present” (1988).  He also produced a detailed account of the parish church in 1991 in celebration of its 240th anniversary - “Shettleston Old Parish Church, 1751-1991.”

Born is Eastmuir, Shettleston and educated at Eastbank Academy, Waugh lived in the district all of his life and drew on his personal experiences, and those of other residents in addition to his own researches, to compile his books.  He worked at Sir William Arrol & Co. Limited in Dunn Street, Bridgeton from leaving school until 1985, with an interruption during World war II when he served with the Highland Light Infantry.  Latterly, as Arrol's Shipping and Transport manager, he was responsible for the transportation of considerable tonnages of steel for projects such as the Forth, Humber and Severn Bridges and the Drax, Longannet, Cockenzie and Torness power stations.  This was at a time when Arrol’s business was contracting and Waugh found himself in the position of being the only person left with enough experience to undertake the arrangements of what had once been a routine task at Arrol’s.
