XXVII.
THE WHEAT SHEAF INN,
AT THE ENTRANCE TO THE NEW DUMBARTON ROAD.
THERE was, fifty years ago, no pleasanter or more popular walk for the citizens of Glasgow than that along Anderston Walk and Dumbarton Road as far as Overnewton, where on the right-hand side of the road stood the hospitable Wheat Sheaf Inn. It was a natural resting-place in the vicinity of the delightful green dells of the Kelvin. There, after a healthy ramble up and down the banks of the stream, the traveller obtained comforting refreshment, mayhap entertained a fair companion, and debated with his fellows the position of the country at home and abroad, or sang a jovial stave. The Inn served its day worthily, and was swept away during the operations of the City Improvement Trust a few years ago.
