BELVIDERE

50) Belvidere House

The 18th century estate of Belvidere was formed on Wester Dalbeth from various portions of land including part of Westthorn and "Little Newlands". Its 33 acres were aggregated under this title - which is derived from Italian meaning beautiful view - by John McCall, son of Tobacco Lord, Samuel McCall. He built the mansion house shown here, where he resided until his death in 1790.

The property fell to his son-in-law, Robert McNair who was himself the grandson and heir to Robert McNair. The latter owned a considerable amount of property in and around Glasgow including Jeanfield. McNair left Belvidere in 1813 and the estate was owned for the following seven years by Mungo Nutter Campbell who became Lord Provost in 1824. Along with Springbank, Belvidere was incorporated into the ever expanding Glasgow in 1846 along with Calton, Dalmarnock and Bridgeton.
