Egypt Farm October, 2005 - Janette Martin - ancestrail@aol.co
I am trying to find out more about the farmhouse called "Egypt" which was owned by the Gordon family in the 1920s and is situated off present day Dalness St (previously known as Calton St). According to the Mitchell, this farm was given the name by a soldier who had fought in Egypt in the British Army but they have no knowledge of the date, campaign or name of the soldier Some of my ancestors, John and Janet Scoular and their family, lived in Tollcross in Calton St in the late 18th century and first half of the 19th century. The 1841 cesus shows that other family members ...were employed as what looks like "?H orIL WS/Calton". Do you have any idea what this would have been? Yours sincerely, Janette Martin
November, 2005 - Keith Duncan - keith.m.duncan@gmail.com This farm may have received its name as is widely believed, but the nagging fact is, is that there are no facts to back the claim. You should be aware that the term "Egyptian" was given to gypsies in Scotland in the middle ages and later and its quite possible that the travelling Romany people used the area as a camp when in the vicinity. I favour this origin against the "returning soldier" one which seems a bit too pat. All the best, Robert Murray |
