Monteith & Co

December, 2005 - Eric Hodge - erichodge2002@yahoo.co.uk

Dear Mr. Adams,

I have read your excellent site with interest.

I am trying to find any business records remaining of Henry Monteith & Co. Specifically those relating to Blantyre Mill.

My interest is numismatic. Certain businesses in the Glasgow area countermarked Spanish American silver 8 reales (dollars) with their name and a value, during the period 1780-1830, to pay workers and suppliers, because of the lack of proper currency from the Royal Mint. One of these was 'Blantyre Works' and a value of 5/-.

I am trying to locate contemporary records relating to any and all aspects of this countermarking.

Thank you for your help.

Eric Hodge.
