London Road

May, 2005 - Keith Duncan - keith.m.duncan@gmail.com

Hi there,

My great-great-grandfather was William Reid - surgeon in Calton/Bridgeton, he was awarded licentiate of Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1831 and appears to have stayed in Orr St, then Canning St and after that to Morris Place. As you will realise, many of the street names have changed through time, I have found cross-referencing numbers in  London Road to Canning Street hard enough let alone consider Barrowfield Road as was before Canning Street.

At present I am trying to ascertain more precisely where certain properties were. In particular I am interested in knowing more about "Barrowfield Medical Halls" - these were at 92 Canning Street - I believe William Reid possibly worked from these premises. Also I am trying to cross reference numbers in Barrowfield Road, to Canning St nos, to London Road nos.

So far I have:

In London Road
Mech Inst (later YMCA) - 498 - 506 London Road
Bank Buildings (poss Western Bank?) - 524 London Road
Greenhead Barrowfield Parish Church - 564 London Road
Selyns - 549-555 (poss 565?) London Road.

In Canning St:
Selyn - 94 Canning St
Struthers Brewers (1831) - 120 Canning Street Struthers Brewers (1841) - 38  Canning Street

Barrowfield Road:
Very limited info
 :-(

Robert Struthers appears to have lived at 65 Barrowfield Road (his house is later shown as 114 Canning Street (1831) and 40 Canning Street (1841).

The Greenhead UP church was not built until around 1840 shortly before the disruption  - so that would not have any address in Barrowfield Road per se.

William's father was Henry Reid - grocer & spirit dealer in Calton - some property is described in his will, but no addresses are mentioned :-(

I would be interested to know what if anything you have learned with regard to cross referencing of numbers within this streets or otherwise establishing the location of property.

Thanks in advance. -- Keith Duncan
