Thief Loan

February, 2006 - Billy & Margaret Dunlop - dunlop2000@shaw.ca

Hello,

Can you help with this?  My mother was born and bred in Bridgeton (Norman Street) and she spent most of her time in Bridgeton.  She is now almost 82 years old.  She talks about a place called the "Thief Lawn" but can't remember where it is.  I have been told it is in the Franklin Street/Reid Street area, but have also been told it's in the James Street area.  Please advise if you know where this "Thief Lawn" is.

Thanks,

Margaret Dunlop,

(I suspect Lawn is Loan, a Scots version of Lane, if this helps - GA)

Hi Margaret ,

My name is Bernard Doherty I was born and raised in number 17 Norman Street.  I believe that the thiefs lawn were the old buildings in Poplin Street and Reid Street before they built what we called the new houses.  I always wondered why it got that name, it must have been a wild place at one time. If you find out different I would like to know.
